What is Reflexology?

Integrative Reflexology was developed by Claire Marie Miller a massage therapist in North Carolina.

The benefits of stimulating the feet for healing purposes were known to our ancestors all over the world.  Pressure point massage - which forms the basis of modern foot reflexology technique - is related to the ancient practice of acupressure.  The relationships between various points of the feet and internal organs were also known to ancient Native Americans, whose recorded culture dates back to 1000 B.C., and this knowledge was utilized in the treatment of disease, illness, and pain.

Modern reflexology has its origins in a system started by Harry Bond Bressler, M.D. at the turn of the 20th century when he became interested in the possibility of treating internal organs via massaging the points in various zones of the body.

How is it done?  Is it painful?

A typical Reflexology session will consist of pressure being placed on different areas of the feet to stimulate major organs and glands. Through this stimulation, Reflexology can help the body in its own healing process or inform you of what may be going on in your body.

Reflexology is generally not painful at all.  Occasionally a certain point may generate some heat or discomfort but through communication the therapist can learn if the client is experiencing any discomfort.

How long does a session last?

Typically a Reflexology session on its own lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.  As part of any Swedish or Deep Tissue Massage, some Reflexology (mainly of the feet) is performed.
